It would have been barely noticeable the all-dark clothing the Badgers wore during warmups Friday before their 3-1 win against Marquette at the UW Field House. Both UW's and Marquette's instructing staff sported dark during the match.

It was to help Rachel Richardson, a Duke sophomore volleyball player, and to condemn prejudice in all areas, particularly on the volleyball court.

Richardson took to Twitter following her group's down against BYU on Aug. 26 to stand in opposition to racial slurs shouted at her and her colleagues during their match in Provo, Utah. She said the "slurs and remarks" guided at her made her vibe perilous, and she didn't feel that authorities at the game acted rapidly to stop the occurrence.

UW was in Texas and just had completed its season opener against TCU when the players caught wind of the episode at BYU.

"We as a whole concluded we will have a voice in this," UW junior Devyn Robinson said. "We will stand up, we will uphold posts on Instagram. Tell the world that this isn't OK and we stand with her."

Marquette mentor Ryan Theis received an email Wednesday from "a huge group of mentors of variety" asking volleyball crews to help Richardson — and all ethnic minorities — by wearing the biggest shopping day of the year.

"It was an easy decision," Theis said. "It's not only our group remaining there. The whole game doesn't need that piece of our way of life. Ideally it expresses something for our competitors of variety, and we absolutely don't believe they should feel awkward in any climate."

Nobody addressed when the Badgers ran out onto the court in all dark. They acknowledged their title rings and watched the flag drop while standing up against bigotry.

UW was in its conventional red and white pullovers when the match started, however the mentors stayed wearing dark. Indeed, even the players who won't play joined their mentors.

"I can't simply remove my race from the game," Robinson said. "This is me, I am essential for this. I was truly thankful I had the option to show my help with the group donning dark."

It was UW's home opener after its 2021 public title run. UW mentor Kelly Sheffield said it was significant for the Badgers to involve their foundation in that spotlight second.

"At the point when you have a stage here, with the accompanying that we have and the achievement that we have, we view that in a serious way," Sheffield said. "That is something we discuss. This is absolutely something or other, yet it's by all accounts not the only thing. There's a ton of things these folks are enthusiastic about. I believe everyone's pretty secured arm-and-arm in this."
