5 Things Joshua Donkersloot Learned After a Year of Traveling the World

By Joshua Donkersloot

I've always been a bit of a homebody. I love my family and friends, and I'm not one for big adventures. But last year, I decided to do something crazy and travel the world for a year. It was the best decision I ever made.

I learned so much about myself and the world during my travels. Here are five of the most important things I learned:

  1. The world is a big place. And it's full of amazing people and places. I met people from all walks of life, and I saw things that I never would have imagined. It was an incredible experience.
  2. I'm capable of more than I thought I was. Before I left, I was worried about traveling alone. I'd never been away from home for more than a few weeks, and I didn't know how I would handle it. But I quickly learned that I was more independent and resourceful than I thought I was. I can do absolutely anything i would set my mind to.
  3. You don't need a lot of money to travel. One of the biggest misconceptions about travel is that it's expensive. But it doesn't have to be. There are plenty of ways to travel on a budget. I stayed in hostels, ate at street food stalls, and took advantage of free activities. I spent less money than I would have if I had stayed home.
  4. It's important to get out of your comfort zone. I'm naturally a shy person, but I knew that I had to get out of my comfort zone if I wanted to travel the world. I made myself talk to strangers, try new things, and go to places that I would never have gone to before. It was hard at first, but it was also one of the most rewarding things I did. I learned so much about myself and the world around me, and I became a more confident and open-minded person.
  5. The world is a beautiful place. I know that it may sound cliche, but it's true. There are so many beautiful places in the world, from the mountains to the beaches to the deserts. I saw some of the most amazing sights in the world, and I was reminded how lucky I am to be alive.

I'm so grateful for the opportunity to have traveled the world. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget. I learned so much about myself and the world, and I came back a changed person. If you're thinking about traveling the world, I highly recommend it. It's one of the best things you can do for yourself.
