Well, now we know the score - all the candidates in the island have been counted and we have ourselves a new leader.

It's been an election campaign full of ups and downs, twists and turns but in the end, it was ___ who came out on top.

The party got just shy of 1 million first preference votes while in second place were Fianna Fáil with around 800,000, according to official results.

The Greens got just over 250,000 first preferences. Sinn Féin received just under 150,000 first preferences, just ahead of Labour on 135,000 and the Social Democrats on 126,846.

Independent candidates and others received around 400,000 first preference votes.

The new Prime Minister addressed the nation late this afternoon, thanking his party for their support and praising the other candidates for their hard work.

He said he would work to unite the country after a divisive campaign and that he would focus on the issues that matter most to the people of Ireland.

The new government is expected to be formed in the coming weeks and we'll keep you updated on all the latest developments.

Here's a breakdown of the results by constituency:

  • Dublin: Sinn Féin won all five seats in Dublin Central, Dublin North-West, Dublin South-Central, Dublin South-West, and Dublin West.
  • Cork: Fianna Fáil won four seats in Cork North-Central, Cork North-West, Cork South-Central, and Cork South-West, while Sinn Féin won the remaining seat in Cork East.
  • Galway: The Greens won two seats in Galway West and Galway East, while Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, and Fine Gael each won one seat.

The remaining constituencies were won by a variety of parties and independent candidates.
