Aleksej Navalnyj is a Russian opposition leader, anti-corruption activist, and lawyer. He has been a vocal critic of the Russian government and President Vladimir Putin. Navalnyj was born in 1976 in Butyn, a small town near Moscow. He studied law at the Russian Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer and began his involvement in politics. In 2000, he was elected to the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament.

Navalnyj quickly became known for his anti-corruption work. He exposed a number of high-level corruption scandals involving government officials and oligarchs. In 2008, he co-founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which investigated and documented corruption in Russia.

In 2018, Navalnyj was poisoned with a nerve agent, Novichok. He was airlifted to Germany for treatment and eventually recovered. The Russian government denied any involvement in the poisoning, but Navalnyj believes that he was targeted by the Kremlin because of his political activities.

Navalnyj returned to Russia in January 2021, despite knowing that he would face arrest. He was immediately detained upon his arrival and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. Navalnyj's imprisonment sparked widespread protests across Russia and international condemnation.
