Alternative Energy

Jace, Kai, Danny, Zack

Alternative Energy is an alternative to non-renewable recources for energy like coal, natural gas, oil, etc. The definition from Dictionary.com is; energy, as solar, wind, or nuclear energy, that can replace or supplement traditional fossil-fuel sources, as coal, oil, and natural gas.

Some common types of Alternative Energy are; Wind, Solar, Hyrdroelectric, Nuclear, Geothermal, and Biofuels.

Solar panels allow particles of light to knock electrons free from atoms, generating electricity.

Solar Energy is the use of sunlight. Light can be changed into heat energy or into electricity with solar panels.

The wind spins the propellers around a rotor, which is connected to the main shaft which spins a generator to make electricity.

Wind Energy is the making of electricity from wind, mostly by using propeller-like turbines.

Splits atoms to produce heat to make steam used by a turbine generator to make electricity.

Nuclear Energy uses splits atoms to release energy stored in the atomic bonds of elements.

Water is held behind the dam and the force of the water being released spins the blades of a giant turbine.

Hydro Electricy captures energy from falling water.

  From recently harvested plants.

Biofuel and ethanol are plant-derived gasoline substitutes for powering vehicles.

Goes to hot water underground, the heat is used to drive an electrical generator.

Geothermal Energy is the use of the earth's internal heat to boil water for heating buildings or generating electricity.

Heres a fun way to remember these!   Shnwgb

A few Interesting facts; Solar Energy was first used in 1839!

The largest Hyrdroelectric dam in the world is Longtan Dam, at Hongshui River, China.

The Roscoe Wind Farm in Roscoe, Texas, has the most wind turbines in the world, with 627 wind turbines! Wow!!!
