Keane's performances for Coventry City earned him a move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2003. He spent seven seasons at Tottenham and scored 122 goals in all competitions. He was the club's top goalscorer in the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons and helped them to win the League Cup in 2008.

In 2010, Keane joined Liverpool on loan for the remainder of the season. He scored seven goals in 28 appearances for Liverpool and helped them to win the League Cup. He returned to Tottenham at the end of the season but was unable to regain his first-team place.

Keane joined West Ham United on loan in January 2011 and then made the move permanent in the summer of 2011. He spent three seasons at West Ham and scored 30 goals in all competitions. He left West Ham in 2014 and joined Indian Super League club ATK.

Keane retired from professional football in 2016. He made 146 appearances for the Republic of Ireland and scored 68 goals. He is the Republic of Ireland's all-time top goalscorer and is considered one of the greatest Irish footballers of all time.
