Apple recently reached a settlement agreement in a class-action lawsuit accusing the tech giant of violating users' privacy with its Siri voice assistant. If you're an Apple user, here's what you need to know about the settlement and how it might affect you:
The lawsuit alleges that Apple's Siri voice assistant secretly recorded and stored users' conversations without their knowledge or consent. Plaintiffs argued this practice breached users' privacy and violated California's privacy laws.
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Apple agreed to pay $95 million to eligible class members. Class members include anyone who owned an Apple device with Siri enabled between October 21, 2014, and April 26, 2021.
The amount of money you receive from the settlement will depend on how many devices you owned during the class period and whether you submit a valid claim form. According to estimates, each eligible class member could receive up to $20 per device, with a maximum payout per household of $3,000.
To file a claim, you must submit a claim form online no later than March 28, 2023. You can access the claim form at the settlement administrator's website: www.SiriSettlement.com.
If you previously filed a claim in the Siri lawsuit, you will automatically be included in the settlement and do not need to take any further action.
