Are You a People Pleaser?
How many times are asked to help with something, from doing a small task to organizing the neighborhood barbecue?
Are you the one everyone turns to when they need to talk? If you’re the person who always puts others before yourself, you may be a people pleaser.
There’s nothing wrong with being a compassionate person who likes to help out. But if people pleasing is a compulsion, it can be downright exhausting. People pleasers find it hard to speak their mind and live their own lives, because they're too busy trying to make everyone else happy.
If you recognize yourself in this description, it might be time to start taking some steps to take better care of yourself.
Here are a few tips to help you break free from the people-pleasing cycle:
- Start saying no more often. Noooo! It’s not a negative word! Saying no is a great way to set boundaries and protect your time. Of course, it’s okay to say yes sometimes, but you shouldn't feel obligated to do something you don't want to do.
- Learn to ask for help. People pleasers often try to do everything themselves, which can lead to burnout and anxiety. Yes, you’re super-capable, but don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it! There are plenty of people who would be happy to lend a hand.
- Take time for yourself. People pleasers often put their own needs last. You need to make time for yourself, to relax and recharge. So read a book, watch a movie, or go for a walk. If it feels selfish, so what? Take the time anyway.
- Know that you can't please everyone. It’s a fact. If you try to please everyone, you'll end up frustrating yourself and disappointing others. Learn to focus on doing things that make you happy, and don't worry about what other people think. Easier said than done, but a rule to live by, nevertheless.
- Be kind to yourself. People pleasers often focus on the bad, and this focus can lead to low self-esteem. Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion that you show others. It will make a big difference in your life.
Breaking free from people-pleasing can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. If you can learn to take care of yourself, you'll be happier and healthier.
