Dear College Students,
I can imagine times have changed tremendously over the decades, as the world around me seems to advance daily and it is only two thousand twenty. I can only assume the world is unimaginably advanced as so much time will pass after I write this letter. Though right now, technology and infrastructure are progressing at an astonishing rate, the beautiful parts of the earth seem to cry out in objection. Global warming is an alarming issue as large ice burgs are melting in the Arctic Ocean, intimidating wildfires destroy wildlife, pollution is at an all-time high, and more I never thought I would see in my lifetime. I only hope that after I leave the earth those passionate about the planet can make a change; however, it does not seem promising at the moment. I am writing this letter to inform others that the earth is crying out for help, and right now is the time to be passionate about the world.
I can remember from a very young age how close I was to nature. It is correct to assume that nature and I were the closest of friends. Growing up in the beautiful fields of Mississippi, I was well acquainted with the beauty of nature and everything within it. I spent my days frolicking in the fields of tall grass amongst the cows looking for the perfect location for my next fort to be built. Every day after I finished my schoolwork, I would be outside until my mom called me in for supper. My parents relished in the fact that their kids loved the outdoors so much; therefore, they never had any qualms about us being outside. This love for nature never diminished as I grew older. I have experienced so many parts of the world now that I firmly believe that nature holds a power within it that is incomparable to the tallest buildings and smartest electronics, and it is our responsibility to ensure that this power and beauty remains as the world changes.
I give you all this memory to give you the imagery of my personal relationship with nature, but also a foundation for why I am passionate about preserving the beauty within it. There are many common luxuries and beautiful things today, yet most of what brings joy is man-made and has little to no relation to nature. It is important to understand, however, that nature has been and always will be. It is constant and is meant to exist for some of the most vital things we need to survive like food, water, medicines, sustainable energy, and more. It is important to ensure that nature remains constant through generations because we desperately need what it provides. We rely on nature more than we often think we do. Yes, the interesting technological gadgets are “cool”, but to put it into perspective, those gadgets operate on materials from the earth. Life stems from nature; therefore, it must be protected and preserved at all costs, and I am enlisted you to ensure that this happens.
Though it is proven that we need nature for vital resources to sustain life, there is a definite beauty that we should strongly desire to preserve. There is so much within nature that contains so much beauty I would describe it as having power. Nature is intimidatingly powerful because of its indescribable beauty that as humans we suffer to comprehend. It is a force greater than anyone could ever imagine. It can be frightening, yet so incredibly peaceful. The vibrant colors and the harmonious sounds are the most satisfying therapy known to man. Nature provides satisfaction and luxury that is incomparable to any man-made substitute. I have experienced this power for so long. I have snowmobiled up snowy peaks, hiked to see magnificent waterfalls, dived into the deep blue sea amongst the fish, and I can attest that this is joy. Nature is a representation of purity that brings happiness, joy, and peacefulness that I hope you all grasp and preserve until the end of time.
Your friend,
Aryn Parrish
