Well, we've reached the end of another year and the 2025 BAFTA nominations are finally here! As always, there are some surprises and snubs, but overall it's a strong list of contenders. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Best Film: The nominees for Best Film are a diverse bunch, ranging from big-budget blockbusters to intimate dramas. Leading the pack with 12 nominations is "Conclave," a historical epic about the election of a new pope. It's followed by "Emilia Pérez," a Spanish-language drama about a young woman's coming-of-age in the 1960s, which has 11 nominations. Other nominees include "The Brutalist," a British drama about a young architect, and "Anora," an Irish-language film about a woman who returns to her childhood home after her mother's death.
  • Best Actor: The race for Best Actor is shaping up to be a close one, with a number of strong contenders. Timothée Chalamet is nominated for his role as a young Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown." He's up against Colin Farrell for his performance as a troubled father in "The Lobster," and Tom Hanks for his role as a grumpy old man in "Mr. Holmes." Other nominees include Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation" and Michael Fassbender for "Macbeth."
  • Best Actress: The Best Actress race is equally competitive, with a number of talented actresses in the running. Saoirse Ronan is nominated for her role as a young immigrant in "Brooklyn." She's up against Cate Blanchett for her performance as a lesbian romance in "Carol," and Jennifer Lawrence for her role as a young woman who falls in love with a soldier in "Joy." Other nominees include Brie Larson for "Room" and Emma Watson for "Beauty and the Beast."
  • Best Director: The nominees for Best Director are a mix of experienced filmmakers and up-and-comers. Paolo Sorrentino is nominated for "Conclave," his third film to be nominated for a BAFTA. He's up against Lenny Abrahamson for "Room," his first film to be nominated for a BAFTA. Other nominees include Todd Haynes for "Carol," Ridley Scott for "The Martian," and Adam McKay for "The Big Short."
