Bandi Chhor Divas: The Day of Liberation
It was the night of Kartik Chhaturdashi in 1619, and the Sikhs were celebrating Bandi Chhor Divas, a day to mark the release of their sixth guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib, from wrongful imprisonment by Mughal emperor Jahangir.
The prison gates of the Gwalior Fort were opened and the saintly Guru was finally set free amidst the thunder of artillery and the rejoicing of his followers. This joyous occasion commemorates his dauntless spirit and is widely celebrated in Punjab and across Sikh communities worldwide.
In Gurdwaras and homes alike, lamps are lit and communal prayers are offered to honor the brave and just Guru Hargobind Sahib. On this day, the Sikh community remembers not only his physical liberation but also the timeless truths he taught about equality, justice, and the fearless pursuit of one`s faith.
The legend of the Bandi Chhor Divas is a testament to the Sikh spirit of courage and perseverance. It is a reminder of the indomitable will to stand up for what is right, no matter how difficult or intimidating the circumstances may seem.
As we recall the events of that historic night, let us draw inspiration from Guru Hargobind Sahib's example and strive to live with the same steadfast resolve and unwavering belief. May the light of Bandi Chhor Divas continue to illuminate our path and inspire us to become agents of change, spreading peace and justice wherever we go.
