There are lots of different things that we will be trying to cover about settlement:

1. Capital city has things likebig department stores, tubes airports, railways and it is generally where the prime minister, president or monarch will live.

2. Cities will have less things than a capital city but still a lot of stuff like football teams/stadiums, large shoping centres, railways and airports

3. A large town will have shoping centres as well, secondary schools museums and colleges

4. A small town will have a library, a bank, resturants and hotels.

5. A large village will have primary schools, health care, supermarket and cafes.

6. A small village will have a village shop, a church and a post office.

7. A hamlet will have houses and maybe a phone box but as the settlement grows, so will the services.

8. An isolated dwelling will have one single house, but nothing else.

How to identify urban land use on maps

The central buisness district has:

  • Main roads coming together
  • May have and inner ring road
  • May have churches, a hospial, cathedral, museum, tourist infomation centres

19th centuary housing has:

  • Straight rows of small houses
  • Streets close together
  • Little or no green space
  • Often close to a factory, railway or canal.

Housing 1920-1950

  • Houses usually have gardens
  • Streets are usually straight
  • Schools and parks neaarby

Modern Housing

  • Further from the CBD
  • Houses usually have gardens
  • Houses often in small groups
  • Schools and parks nearby

Old industrial area

  • Often found along the river, railway or canal
  • Large buildiings
  • Factory may be shown as "works"

New industrials area

  • Look for label "Ind est" or "science park"
  • Towards the edge of town
  • Usually close to main roads
