Big Jook

He was a man of few words, but his presence commanded attention. As his eyes surveyed the room, a subtle smile played upon his lips, as though he were privy to a secret that no one else knew.

His name was Anthony Mims, but everyone called him “Big Jook.” He was a pillar of the community, a man who had seen it all and done it all, or so they said. Some whispered that he was involved in shady dealings, but no one dared to speak ill of him to his face.

I first met Big Jook at a local barbershop. I was fresh out of college and still trying to find my way in the world. As I sat in the chair, nervously awaiting my turn, I noticed a man sitting in the corner, reading a newspaper. He was tall and imposing, with a goatee and a shaved head. There was an air of authority about him that drew me in.

When it was my turn, I took a seat next to him. As the barber lathered up my hair, I couldn't help but ask, “Who are you?”

He smiled and replied, “I'm Big Jook.”

That was all he said, but it was enough. I knew that I was in the presence of someone special. From that day on, I made it a point to visit Big Jook whenever I was in town. He became a mentor to me, sharing his wisdom and advice. He taught me the importance of hard work, loyalty, and respect.

As I got to know Big Jook better, I learned that he had a heart of gold. He was always willing to help those in need, whether it was a friend or a stranger. He once told me, “If you see someone who's down, don't walk past them. Lend a helping hand.”

Big Jook was taken from us too soon. In January 2024, he was shot and killed outside a Memphis restaurant. The news sent shockwaves through the community. I was heartbroken, but I knew that his legacy would live on.

Big Jook was more than just a man. He was a legend, a symbol of hope and resilience. He taught us the importance of community and the power of kindness. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

Rest in peace, Big Jook. Your spirit will continue to guide us.
