Biggest Footballing Upset Of The Year?
There have been many surprising results in the 2024/25 Premier League season, but few can have been as shocking as West Ham's 2-1 win over Manchester United on Saturday.
The Hammers went into the game as huge underdogs, having lost their last three matches and sitting just one point above the relegation zone. United, on the other hand, were unbeaten in their last five and had just beaten Liverpool 3-0 in the Carabao Cup.
But it was the Hammers who took the lead in the first half, when Crysencio Summerville fired home from close range. United equalized through Casemiro in the second half, but West Ham were not to be denied. In the dying minutes of the game, Jarrod Bowen won a controversial penalty which he converted to give the Hammers all three points.
The result was met with disbelief by many, but West Ham manager David Moyes was understandably delighted.
"It's a great result for us," he said. "We knew it would be a tough game, but we believed in ourselves and we got the win."
United manager Erik ten Hag was less impressed, and admitted that his team "didn't deserve to win."
"We were poor today," he said. "We made too many mistakes and we didn't create enough chances. We need to learn from this and improve."
The result leaves United in seventh place in the table, while West Ham move up to 14th. It is still early in the season, but the Hammers' victory could prove to be a significant turning point in their campaign.
