The early exchanges were all Southampton, and it was no surprise when they took the lead after just 10 minutes. A slick passing move down the left-hand side saw the ball fall to Nathan Redmond, who fired home from close range. Cardiff looked shell-shocked and struggled to get a foothold in the game.
Southampton continued to dominate, and it was only a matter of time before they doubled their lead. This time it was Danny Ings who got on the scoresheet, heading home from a James Ward-Prowse corner. Cardiff were now well and truly on the back foot, and it seemed like Southampton would run riot.
But to their credit, Cardiff showed great resilience and fought their way back into the game. After a couple of half-chances, they finally got their breakthrough just before half-time. A long ball from the back found Junior Hoilett, who showed great skill to control the ball and fire home from the edge of the area.
The second half was a more even affair, with both teams having chances to score. Cardiff were spurred on by their goal before half-time, and they started to cause Southampton some problems. However, the Saints defense held firm, and they managed to see out the game to claim a hard-fought three points.
In the end, it was a game of two halves. Southampton were excellent in the first half, but Cardiff showed great character to come back into the game in the second half. It was a fair result in the end, and both teams will be happy with a point.
For Cardiff, it was a vital point in their battle to avoid relegation. They are now five points clear of the drop zone, and they will be confident of staying up if they can continue to show the same fighting spirit that they did against Southampton.
For Southampton, it was a missed opportunity to close the gap on the top four. They are now five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and they will need to start winning games more consistently if they want to challenge for a Champions League place.
