Growing up, I was always told that I was a brave little girl.
I would climb trees, jump off swings, and even ride my bike without training wheels. But when it came to spicy food, I was a complete coward.
I remember the first time I tried a ghost pepper. I was at a friend's house and they dared me to take a bite. I hesitated for a moment, but then I thought about how brave I was and decided to go for it.
As soon as the pepper hit my tongue, I felt like my whole head was on fire. I started coughing and sputtering, and my eyes watered like crazy.
My friends just laughed and laughed. They told me that I was the biggest wimp they had ever seen.
I was so embarrassed. I couldn't believe that I had let them get to me. I vowed that I would never let them see me eat a ghost pepper again.
But a few years later, I was at a party and someone had brought a bowl of ghost peppers. I remembered how much I had hated them the last time I ate them, but I also remembered how much my friends had teased me.
I decided that I was going to prove to them that I was not a wimp. I took a deep breath and popped a ghost pepper into my mouth.
This time, I was prepared for the heat. I closed my eyes and waited for the pain to hit me. But it never did.
I opened my eyes and looked around. Everyone was staring at me in shock.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"You're not...you're not crying," one of my friends said.
"I'm not?" I asked.
"No," my friend said. "You're just...glowing."
I looked at my hand, and I saw that it was glowing a bright green color. I looked at my face, and I saw that it was glowing, too.
I had accidentally eaten a radioactive ghost pepper.
I started to panic. I didn't know what to do. I ran to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
My face was glowing brighter than ever. I looked like a human glow stick.
I didn't know what to do. I couldn't go back to the party like this. I would be the laughingstock of the town.
I needed to find a way to get rid of this glow. I thought about taking a shower, but I didn't think that would help. I thought about calling a doctor, but I didn't want them to laugh at me.
Finally, I decided to just go back to the party and hope for the best.
When I walked back into the party, everyone stared at me. They couldn't believe their eyes.
"What happened to you?" one of my friends asked.
"I...I ate a radioactive ghost pepper," I said.
My friends started to laugh. They couldn't believe that I had actually done it.
"You're amazing," one of my friends said.
"You're the bravest person I know," another friend said.
I couldn't believe it. I had gone from being a wimp to a hero in the eyes of my friends.
I spent the rest of the night glowing like a human disco ball. I danced and sang and had the time of my life.
I learned that day that it's okay to be afraid of things. But it's also important to face your fears and to never give up on yourself.
So if you're ever afraid of something, just remember the story of Chaela Aron and the radioactive ghost pepper. And remember, you are braver than you think.
