Chagos Islands

The Chagos Islands are a group of seven atolls comprising more than 60 islands in the Indian Ocean about 500 kilometres (310 mi) south of the Maldives archipelago.
The Chagos Islands are a British Overseas Territory and have been administered as part of the British Indian Ocean Territory since 1965.
The islands were previously part of Mauritius, but were separated from it in 1965 when Mauritius gained independence from the United Kingdom.
The Chagos Islands are home to a military base, which is operated by the United States Navy.
The Chagossian people, who were forcibly removed from the islands in the 1960s and 1970s, have been campaigning for the right to return to their homeland.
In 2019, the International Court of Justice ruled that the United Kingdom had unlawfully evicted the Chagossians and that it should allow them to return.
The United Kingdom has not yet complied with the ruling.
