Chiang Wei Liang: A Rising Star in the Film Industry

I've been a fan of Chiang Wei Liang's work since I had the privilege to watch his first short back in 2015. And watching his career ascend to the prominence it has reached as of late... well, it's been like watching a younger brother grow into a successful young man. His accomplishments thus far have been utterly inspiring.
As soon as I heard that he had won the Camera D'Or Special Mention for his latest film, *Mongrel* - a film that's currently making waves in Asian film festivals - I just had to reach out to him for an interview.
And thankfully, he took the time out of his very busy schedule to answer my questions.
What was it like to win the Camera D'Or Special Mention?
It was surreal, to be honest. I never thought I'd win such a prestigious award. I'm so grateful to the jury for recognizing my work.
What inspired you to make *Mongrel*?
I was inspired by the stories of migrant workers in Singapore. I wanted to make a film that would give a voice to these often-overlooked people.
What do you hope audiences will take away from the film?
I hope audiences will gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by migrant workers. I also hope the film will encourage people to be more compassionate towards them.
What are your future plans?
I'm currently working on a new film project. I can't say much about it yet, but I'm very excited about it. I also hope to continue making films that give a voice to the marginalized.
What filmmakers have influenced you the most?
I've been influenced by a wide range of filmmakers, from Wong Kar-wai to Jia Zhangke. I'm drawn to films that are both visually beautiful and emotionally resonant.
What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers?
My advice to aspiring filmmakers is to never give up on your dreams. No matter how difficult it gets, just keep making films. And don't be afraid to experiment and take risks.

Here's to you, Chiang Wei Liang - may you continue to inspire us with your visions and powerful storytelling for many years to come!
