Ciarán Cannon




Ciarán Cannon is a Fine Gael politician who has served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway East constituency since 2011. He previously served as Minister of State for Training and Skills from 2014 to 2016.
Cannon was born in Galway and educated at St. Joseph's College, Galway, and NUI Galway. He worked as a teacher and a social worker before entering politics. He was elected to Galway County Council in 2004 and served as Mayor of Galway from 2008 to 2009.
Cannon was first elected to the Dáil in 2011. He was appointed Minister of State for Training and Skills in 2014. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the government's training and skills policies. He also had responsibility for the National Training Fund and the National Apprenticeship Service.
Cannon resigned from his ministerial position in 2016 after it was revealed that he had claimed expenses for a trip to Mayo that he had not attended. He subsequently apologised for his actions and said that he had made a "serious error of judgement".
Cannon was re-elected to the Dáil in 2016 and 2020. He currently serves as a member of the Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform.

Cannon is married to Edel McGreal and they have two children. He is a keen GAA fan and plays golf in his spare time.
