Claudia Sheinbaum
Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, or simply Claudia Sheinbaum, born on June 24, 1962, in Mexico City, is a Mexican politician who has served as the Head of Government of Mexico City since December 5, 2018. Before being elected head of government, she served as mayor of Tlalpan. She is a member of the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), a leftist party.
Early Life, Education, and Career
Claudia Sheinbaum graduated with honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with a degree in physics. She then earned a master's degree in energy engineering from the same university. She received a doctorate in environmental engineering from the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM).
Sheinbaum began her career as a researcher at UNAM's Institute of Engineering. She later joined the Mexican Institute of Petroleum (IMP) as a researcher. She has authored numerous publications in the fields of energy and environmental engineering.
Political Career
Claudia Sheinbaum's political career began in 2000 when she joined the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD). She served as secretary of the environment for Mexico City from 2000 to 2006. In 2014, she left the PRD and joined MORENA.
In 2015, Sheinbaum was elected mayor of Tlalpan, a borough of Mexico City. She served in this position until 2018, when she was elected Head of Government of Mexico City.
Head of Government
As Head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum has focused on improving public transportation, reducing crime, and promoting sustainable development. She has also implemented social programs to help the city's most vulnerable residents.
Sheinbaum has been praised for her work in improving public transportation. She implemented the Metrobús, a bus rapid transit system, and expanded the Metro, Mexico City's subway system. She has also introduced bike-sharing programs and pedestrianized streets to make the city more walkable and bikeable.
Personal Life
Claudia Sheinbaum is married to Carlos Imaz Gispert, a professor at UNAM. They have two children.
