On October 11, 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa faced off in a highly anticipated Afcon 2025 qualifier.
South Africa was hoping to continue their impressive start to the qualifying campaign, having already defeated South Sudan and Congo in their previous matches. Congo, on the other hand, was looking to bounce back from their loss to South Africa and get their campaign back on track.
The match was played in front of a sold-out crowd at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, Congo. The atmosphere was electric, with both sets of fans creating a cacophony of noise.
South Africa got off to a bright start, and they took the lead in the 15th minute through a well-taken goal from Percy Tau. Congo responded well, and they equalized in the 30th minute through a header from Ben Malango.
The second half was a more even affair, with both teams having chances to win the game. However, neither team could find a winner, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
The result was a fair one, and it leaves both teams in a good position to qualify for Afcon 2025. South Africa is now top of Group K with seven points from three matches, while Congo is third with four points from three matches.
The next match for South Africa is at home to Zimbabwe on October 15, while Congo travels to face Liberia on the same day.
I was fortunate enough to be in attendance at the Stade des Martyrs for the Congo-South Africa match. It was an incredible experience, and I was blown away by the passion and enthusiasm of both sets of fans.
The match itself was also very entertaining, and I was impressed by the quality of play from both teams. I think both teams have a good chance of qualifying for Afcon 2025, and I will be following their progress with great interest.
If you are a fan of African football, then I urge you to check out the Afcon 2025 qualifiers. There have been some great matches so far, and there are still plenty more to come. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.
