A Complex Past
The Czech Republic has a long and tumultuous history, which has left its mark on the land. From the rule of the Hapsburgs to the Velvet Revolution, the country has seen both triumph and tragedy.
In the 14th century, the Czech Republic was ruled by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV. A great patron of the arts, Charles founded the Charles University in Prague and rebuilt much of the city in the Gothic style.
Centuries later, the Czech Republic became part of the Austrian Empire. However, the Czech people's desire for independence never waned. In 1918, the Czech Republic finally gained its independence, but the country's peace was short-lived.
In 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. The Czech people resisted fiercely, but were ultimately defeated. During the Holocaust, hundreds of thousands of Czech Jews were murdered by the Nazis.
After World War II, Czechoslovakia was liberated by the Soviet Union. However, the country soon found itself under communist rule. In 1968, the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia to crush the Prague Spring, a period of political liberalization.
The Velvet Revolution of 1989 finally brought communism to an end in Czechoslovakia. The country peacefully split into two independent states: the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Today, the Czech Republic is a thriving democracy with a strong economy and a vibrant culture. The country is a member of the European Union and NATO, and it is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world.
