Danielle Smith

Danielle Smith is a Canadian politician who has served as the 19th Premier of Alberta since 2022. She is the first woman to hold the position.

Smith was born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1959. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in political science. After working as a journalist, she entered politics in the 1990s. She served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Calgary-Shaw from 2001 to 2012. During her time in the legislature, she held various cabinet positions, including Minister of Health and Wellness and Minister of Infrastructure.

In 2012, Smith left politics to become the president of the Alberta Enterprise Group, a business lobby group. She returned to politics in 2022, when she was elected leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP). She led the UCP to victory in the 2022 provincial election and became Premier of Alberta.

As Premier, Smith has focused on economic development and job creation. She has also been a vocal critic of federal government policies, particularly those related to climate change and energy.

Smith is a controversial figure. Her critics accuse her of being a right-wing populist who is out of touch with the needs of average Albertans. However, her supporters praise her as a strong leader who is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs.

Here are some of Smith's most notable quotes:

  • "I'm not a politician, I'm a leader."
  • "Alberta is open for business."
  • "The federal government is strangling our economy."
  • "We will not be bullied by Ottawa."
  • "I am a fighter and I will fight for Alberta."

Only time will tell what Smith's legacy will be. However, there is no doubt that she is a polarizing figure who has left her mark on Alberta politics.
