Darrel Janz




Darrel Janz was a Canadian television journalist and news anchor who worked for CTV Calgary and CFCN for over 40 years. He was known for his friendly and approachable demeanor, and his dedication to telling stories that mattered to Calgarians.
Janz was born in Altona, Manitoba, in 1939. He began his broadcasting career in 1962 at CFAM Radio in Altona. In 1965, he joined CFCN in Calgary, where he worked as a reporter, anchor, and news director. In 1975, he joined CTV Calgary, where he became the station's main anchor.
Janz was a familiar face to Calgarians for decades. He covered some of the city's biggest stories, including the 1988 Winter Olympics, the 2003 SARS outbreak, and the 2013 floods. He was also a passionate advocate for journalism and community involvement.
In 2015, Janz retired from CTV Calgary. He continued to work as a freelance journalist and public speaker. He also wrote a book about his life in broadcasting, "Heart of the New West."
Janz died in Calgary on November 19, 2022, at the age of 83. He was survived by his wife, Barb, and his children, Scott and Jennifer.
Janz was a true Calgary icon. He was a respected journalist, a dedicated volunteer, and a friend to many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
