David Hogbin




David Hogbin (born 1920, died 1974) was an Australian explorer, author and filmmaker who had a lifelong obsession with the culture and history of eastern New Guinea, and in particular the people of Karimui in the remote mountainous interior of Papua New Guinea.
Hogbin was born in Southport, England, in 1920. He travelled to Australia in 1937 and joined the Australian Army during World War II. He served in the Pacific, and after the war he returned to Australia and studied anthropology at the University of Sydney.
In 1951, Hogbin led an expedition to the Karimui region of Papua New Guinea. He stayed there for two years, and during that time he wrote a book about the people of Karimui, called "The Karimui of the Chimbu". He also made a film about them, called "The Highlanders of New Guinea". The book and the film were very successful, and they helped to bring the people of Karimui to the attention of the world.
Hogbin made several more trips to Papua New Guinea in the years that followed. He continued to write about the people of Karimui, and he also made several more films about them. His work has been praised for its accuracy and its sensitivity to the culture of the people he wrote about.
Hogbin died in 1974, at the age of 54. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the study of the culture of Papua New Guinea. His work has helped to bridge the gap between the people of Papua New Guinea and the rest of the world.
