Dele Farotimi: A Voice for the Voiceless
By Dele Farotimi
My journey as a human rights activist began in the aftermath of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria's history. The military government's brazen disregard for the will of the people ignited a fire within me, a passion to fight for justice and democracy.
I joined forces with other like-minded individuals to form the Citizens' Rally against Oppression (RAMINBA), a platform that provided a voice to the marginalized and oppressed. Through peaceful protests, public rallies, and legal advocacy, we challenged the military junta and demanded a return to democratic rule.
Our efforts were met with fierce resistance. We faced tear gas, baton charges, and arbitrary arrests. But our determination remained unwavering. The struggle for democracy became a defining moment in my life, shaping my values and guiding my path.
After the transition to civilian rule, I continued my activism, focusing on promoting human rights, good governance, and social justice. I have represented countless victims of human rights violations, from political prisoners to the poor and marginalized.
My work has taken me to the depths of Nigeria's prisons, where I have witnessed firsthand the horrors of overcrowding, torture, and inhumane conditions. I have stood in solidarity with the families of victims of extrajudicial killings, demanding accountability and justice.
Through my writings, public lectures, and media appearances, I have sought to raise awareness about human rights issues and advocate for change. I believe that every voice, no matter how small, has the power to make a difference.
The road has not been without its challenges. I have faced threats, intimidation, and even physical attacks. But these experiences have only strengthened my resolve. I am convinced that the fight for justice is a noble one, and I will not be silenced.
As I continue my journey, I am filled with both hope and trepidation. The challenges facing Nigeria today are immense: corruption, poverty, insecurity, and ethnic and religious divisions. But I believe that the spirit of unity and resilience that has always characterized our people will prevail.
I call upon all Nigerians to join hands in building a better future for our country. A future where justice prevails, where the rights of all citizens are respected, and where every voice is heard.
Together, we can create a Nigeria that is truly democratic, prosperous, and just for all.
