I remember vividly the eyes of my parents when I first told them I wanted to be a writer. The look on their faces was of deep concern and worry. They were kind and polite, but their body language told me that they believed I was chasing a fantasy. It was like they were afraid that I would grow up to be a loser, scorned by society for my naivete.
I was young, maybe thirteen or fourteen, and I can't blame my parents. They were just trying to protect me from the harsh realities of the world, a world where only a small number of people ever succeed in making a living from their writing. And if that wasn't enough, the kind of writing I aspired to was poetry, the least profitable form of writing.
I have to admit that there were times when I too thought my parents were right. There were times when I doubted myself, times when I wondered if I was wasting my time, times when I thought of giving up writing altogether. But I kept going, because I had a dream, and I couldn't let go of it. I kept writing and writing and writing, and eventually, I started to get published. I started to make a little money from my writing, and I started to build a following.
I'm not saying that it was easy. It was hard, and there were many times when I wanted to give up. But I never did, and I'm so glad I didn't give up. I'm now a successful writer, and I'm living my dream.
My advice to you is to never be afraid to dare to dream big. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do something, or that you shouldn't do it. If you have a dream, go for it. Work hard, and never give up.
You may not always succeed, but you'll never know unless you try. So go out there, dream big, and never give up.
