Earsie Retamero was dreading going back to school. She had loved summer vacation, swimming in the lake nearly every day, and hanging out with her friends. She was not ready to go back to the routine of school, homework, and tests.
On the first day of school, Earsie Retamero dragged her feet all the way to her classroom. She didn't want to be there. She plopped down in her seat and sighed. She looked around the room at all the other kids. They all seemed so excited to be back in school. Earsie Retamero didn't understand how they could be so happy.
The teacher walked in and started talking about all the fun things they were going to do this year. Earsie Retamero tried to pay attention, but she couldn't help but think about all the things she would rather be doing. She wanted to be outside, playing with her friends. She wanted to be swimming in the lake. She wanted to be doing anything but sitting in a classroom.
Finally, the bell rang and Earsie Retamero was able to escape. She ran out of the classroom and into the hallway. She was so glad to be out of there. She met up with her friends and they started talking about all the fun things they had done over the summer.
Earsie Retamero realized that she wasn't the only one who was dreading going back to school. Her friends were all feeling the same way. They all agreed that they would rather be anywhere but in school.
The friends decided to skip school and go to the park instead. They played on the swings and the slide and they had a picnic lunch. They laughed and talked and they forgot all about school.
When it was time to go home, Earsie Retamero realized that she had actually had a pretty good day. She had spent time with her friends and she had gotten some fresh air. She even started to think that maybe school wouldn't be so bad after all.
The next day, Earsie Retamero went back to school with a new attitude. She was still not thrilled to be there, but she was determined to make the best of it. She started paying more attention in class and she started participating more in discussions. She even started making new friends.
By the end of the week, Earsie Retamero was actually starting to enjoy school. She had realized that it wasn't so bad after all. She was learning new things and she was making new friends. She was even starting to think that she might actually like school.
Of course, there were still some days when Earsie Retamero wished she was anywhere but in school. But those days were becoming fewer and far between. She had finally learned to love school.
