Is Eastern Equine Encephalitis a common disease?

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but severe mosquito-borne disease that can cause inflammation of the brain (encephalitis).

What are the symptoms of EEE?

Many people infected with EEE do not develop symptoms. However, about one in five people who become infected develop symptoms that can range from mild to severe. Symptoms usually begin 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

What is the treatment for EEE?

There is no specific treatment for EEE. Treatment is supportive and may include hospitalization, intravenous fluids, and medications to relieve symptoms.

How can I prevent EEE?

  • Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear long sleeves, pants, and socks when you are outdoors.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Make sure your windows and doors have screens to keep mosquitoes out.

What is the prognosis for EEE?

The prognosis for EEE depends on the severity of the infection. About one-third of people who develop severe EEE die. Another third have permanent brain damage. The remaining third recover completely.
