Eluned Morgan: The Welsh politician who was the first woman to hold the position of Llywydd in the Senedd

Eluned Morgan, the Welsh politician who became the first female Llywydd (Presiding Officer) of the Senedd, has announced that she will be stepping down from her role in May 2023.
Morgan, a member of the Welsh Labour Party, was elected as Llywydd in 2021, making her the first woman to hold the position. She has been a Member of the Senedd (MS) for Mid and West Wales since 2007.
During her time as Llywydd, Morgan has overseen a number of key changes to the Senedd, including the introduction of a new hybrid system of working, which allows MSs to participate in debates and votes remotely. She has also been a vocal advocate for the rights of women and minorities.
In a statement announcing her decision to step down, Morgan said that she had "thoroughly enjoyed" her time as Llywydd, but that it was time for a new chapter in her life.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as Llywydd of the Senedd," she said. "I have met so many amazing people and learned so much about our country and its people."
"I am proud of the work that we have done together to improve the Senedd and make it more accessible to the people of Wales," she added.
Morgan's departure will be a loss to the Labour Party and the Senedd, but she is confident that she will continue to make a positive contribution to Welsh public life in the future.

Personal Impressions:

I had the pleasure of meeting Eluned Morgan on several occasions during my time as a reporter in the Senedd. She is a warm and friendly person, and she is always willing to listen to the concerns of others.
I was particularly impressed by Morgan's commitment to equality and social justice. She is a strong advocate for the rights of women and minorities, and she has used her position as Llywydd to make the Senedd a more inclusive institution.
Morgan is a true role model for women and girls in Wales. She has shown that it is possible to achieve great things in politics, and she has paved the way for other women to follow in her footsteps.
I wish Eluned Morgan all the best for the future. I am sure that she will continue to make a positive contribution to Welsh public life.
