Emma Twigg's Final Act: Rowing into the Sunset in 2024
A Personal Perspective from the Olympic Silver Medalist
Rowing has always held a special place in my heart. From the moment I first gripped an oar and felt the surge of power as I propelled myself forward, I knew this sport was my destiny. Over two decades later, countless strokes, and two Olympic medals later, I can't help but reminisce on my journey and contemplate the final chapter in my rowing story.
Like all great adventures, there are moments that stand out like beacons of light in the fog of time. My Olympic debut in Beijing, where I finished fourth in the single sculls event, was a bittersweet symphony—both a triumph and a tantalizing glimpse of what could have been. Four years later in London, I finally reached the podium, earning a silver medal in the double sculls alongside my dear friend and teammate, Rebecca Scown. That moment was the culmination of a lifelong dream, a testament to the power of perseverance and unwavering belief.
But as the sun sets on my rowing career, I'm filled not only with a sense of accomplishment but also with a profound gratitude. This sport has given me so much—friendships that will last a lifetime, memories that will sustain me in the years to come, and a platform to inspire others. I've learned the importance of setting audacious goals, embracing challenges, and never giving up on my dreams. Rowing has taught me the true meaning of teamwork, the value of hard work, and the indomitable spirit that lies within each and every one of us.
As I look ahead to my final year in the sport, I'm approaching it with a mixture of excitement and a hint of sadness. I know that every race, every stroke, will be imbued with a special significance. My goal is simple: to leave nothing on the water, to give it my all, and to cherish every moment with my fellow rowers.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will be my final chapter as a competitive rower. I'm not sure what the future holds beyond that, but I'm confident that my rowing experience will serve me well in whatever path I choose. The lessons I've learned, the connections I've made, and the memories I've created will be invaluable assets as I navigate the next stage of my life.
To all the young rowers out there who dream of Olympic glory, remember that the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace every moment, learn from every experience, and never stop believing in yourself. And to the rowing community as a whole, thank you for the memories, the support, and the inspiration. It's been an incredible ride, and I'll always cherish the time I've spent on the water.
