Ereader or Tablet Computer

E-Readers And Tablet Computers

iPad MiniA lot of people don't know the difference between e-readers and tablet computers. It's hardly surprising - so many reviews online compare the two devices side by side as if they were the same.

Of course, e-readers are specialized devices which are designed only for reading books. Tablet computers are much more versatile and can be used for playing games, watching videos, surfing the web - anything that you would do on a desktop or laptop computer in other words.

E-Reader Key Points

E-readers use a special e-ink technology screen. It's great for reading on because there is no back light. Even e-readers such as the Kindle Paperwhite and the Nook glowlight use lights which shine onto the text from the front.

It's as close to reading text printed on paper as makes no difference. After you've used an e-reader for an hour or two you will be completely unaware that you're reading on an electronic gadget rather than flipping through the pages of a book.

Another nice feature of the e-ink technology display is the fact that it uses very little power. Power is only required when the page display is being updated (when you're turning the page). That means that you can go for weeks between battery charges, which is handy if you don't want to run out of juice at a good point in your book.

And that's just about it for e-readers. the monochrome e-ink display is brilliant for reading - but pretty much useless for anything else. It's black and white with a slow refresh rate - so surfing the web, watching video, playing games etc. are not going to be possible with an e-reader.

Tablet Computer Main Features

You can do pretty much anything on a tablet computer that you would normally do on either a laptop or a desktop. Watch videos, play games, send e-mails, get on your favorite social network - you name it, you can do it on a tablet.

You can also read e-books on your tablet, although the resolution is not so good as an e-reader and the back light can be annoying. In effect, it's like trying to read with someone shining a light in your eyes.

The nice color touch screen is also very power hungry. You'll be lucky to get more than 10 hours between battery charges - but maybe that's enough for you.

Which One To Choose

If you want to read books - especially for more than half an hour or so at a time, an e-reader is the best choice for you. If you want to do virtually anything else, a tablet computer will give you a lot more versatility.
