Ezekiel Otuoma: A Life Cut Short by Motor Neurone Disease

On a sunny afternoon in July 2023, the Kenyan football community was plunged into mourning as news of the passing of former AFC Leopards striker Ezekiel Otuoma broke. Just 31 years old, Otuoma had succumbed to Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a cruel and debilitating condition that had ravaged his body over the past two years.
Otuoma's journey with MND began in 2020, when he started experiencing weakness in his right leg. Initially dismissed as a minor injury, the symptoms persisted and intensified, eventually spreading to his entire body. Within months, he was diagnosed with MND, a progressive neurological disorder that affects the motor neurons responsible for muscle movement.
Despite the devastating diagnosis, Otuoma refused to give up hope. He underwent extensive physiotherapy to maintain his mobility and strength, and he remained positive and upbeat throughout his ordeal. His determination and resilience inspired countless people, both in Kenya and beyond.

Away from the pitch, Otuoma will always be remembered for his infectious smile and his warm personality. He was a loving husband to Racheal and a doting father to their two young children. His loss has left an irreplaceable void in their lives and in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

In a tribute to her late husband, Racheal wrote, "My heart is shattered. Ezekiel was my best friend, my confidant, and the love of my life. He fought with such courage and dignity, and I am so proud of him. He will be forever in my heart."

Otuoma's passing is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. His legacy as a footballer and as a human being will continue to inspire others for generations to come. Rest in peace, Ezekiel Otuoma.
