F1 Brazil qualifying: Norris storms to pole in chaotic wet session
Lando Norris put in a stunning performance to claim pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix in a rain-affected qualifying session that was red-flagged five times.
The McLaren driver was in imperious form as he lapped the Interlagos circuit in a time of 1:28.522, over half a second clear of George Russell in second.
It was a remarkable achievement from Norris, who had struggled for pace in the dry conditions earlier in the weekend. But in the wet, he was a different driver, showing all the skill and composure that has made him one of the most exciting young talents in Formula 1.
Russell was also impressive in the wet, and he will be confident of challenging for victory on Sunday. The Mercedes driver has been in fine form all weekend, and he will be hoping to continue that form in the race.
Completing the top three was Yuki Tsunoda in the AlphaTauri. The Japanese driver put in a superb lap to secure his best qualifying result of the season.
Max Verstappen, who had been fastest in the dry conditions, could only manage fourth. The Red Bull driver made a mistake on his final lap, which cost him a chance of pole.
Lewis Hamilton was fifth for Mercedes, ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari. Fernando Alonso was seventh for Alpine, ahead of Esteban Ocon in the other Alpine.
Sergio Perez was ninth for Red Bull, ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo.
The qualifying session was overshadowed by the wet weather, which caused several delays. The red flags were out five times, as the rain made it difficult for the drivers to keep their cars on track.
But despite the challenging conditions, the drivers put on a thrilling show. Norris was the star of the show, but Russell, Tsunoda and the other top drivers all showed their class.
The Brazilian Grand Prix is set to be a wet race, and Norris will be the favorite to win from pole position. But Russell, Tsunoda and the other top drivers will all be looking to challenge the McLaren driver.
