By Fleta Nagi
Growing up with the name Fleta Nagi wasn't always easy. It's not exactly a name that rolls off the tongue, and it often led to a few bewildered stares and mispronunciations.
In elementary school, my teacher called me "Fleta Wagner" for the first few weeks. It took her a while to get it right, and I didn't have the heart to correct her. After all, Wagner sounded a lot more normal than Nagi.
But as I got older, I learned to embrace the uniqueness of my name. It made me stand out, even if it meant sometimes being the subject of jokes.
One memorable summer, I went to camp with my friends. I was excited, but also a bit nervous. I knew I would be the only Fleta Nagi there.
As soon as I arrived, one of the counselors asked me my name. I said it loud and clear, "Fleta Nagi." Her eyes widened, and she burst out laughing.
"Fleta Nagi?" she repeated. "That's the funniest name I've ever heard!"
I was mortified. I didn't think my name was funny at all. But then I looked around and saw that everyone was laughing, too.
I realized that Fleta Nagi was a bit of a mouthful, but it was also unique and memorable. It was the kind of name that people remembered, even if they never met me again.
Over the years, I've met countless people who have never forgotten my name. There was the bartender who served me a drink every week, the receptionist at my doctor's office, and even the guy I met on a blind date.
Thanks to my unusual name, I've made friends, started conversations, and even gotten a few free drinks. It's a gift, in a weird and wonderful way.
So, if you're ever thinking about changing your name, I urge you to reconsider. A unique name might make life a little more challenging, but it also makes it more interesting. And as Fleta Nagi, I wouldn't have it any other way.
