Paul Pogba has spoken out.
Pogba tested positive for testosterone on August 20 last year after a match against Udinese. Testosterone is a hormone that temporarily boosts athletic performance and is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Pogba was provisionally suspended last September and faced a two- to four-year ban under FIFA rules.
Pogba initially denied the allegations and then submitted another sample. But a month later, the results came back, positive again, and Pogba was still not allowed back on the field, with only the final decision to be made.
"Juventus midfielder Pogba has been handed a four-year ban due to the results of a doping test," Goal.com reported on Monday. The result is final.
Pogba's claim was reportedly not accepted. "The National Anti-Doping Tribunal has accepted the request for a four-year ban. Pogba and his representatives were unable to prove that he was unaware of the drugs being administered," it added.
The four-year suspension was considered by many to be the end of his career. Born in 1993, Pogba will be in his mid-30s even if he returns in four years. That's a lot to ask for a comeback.
Pogba also took to social media to express his frustration and vowed to appeal. "I was informed of the anti-doping organization's decision today and I believe it is wrong. I am sad and heartbroken that everything I have achieved in my professional career has been taken away from me. I have never knowingly taken any substance in violation of the rules," he said. He says he didn't knowingly take the substance
"As a professional athlete, I would never use a banned substance to enhance my performance, nor would I ever cheat my opponents or their players or supporters. I will appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)," he said, revealing his plans to appeal. The Court of Arbitration for Sport is an independent organization that arbitrates various disputes in international sports. Even if a ruling is issued, it is only an arbitration award that is not legally binding.
The words of a World Cup winner. Pogba became a world-class player at Juventus and made a spectacular return to his hometown club Manchester United. With United, he showed off his individual prowess by winning the UEFA Europa League.
At the World Cup, Pogba was dominant. He started all but one game and helped France win the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Most notably, he scored the winning goal in the final against Croatia with his team up 2-1.
