Gogo Skhotheni

A Life of Service

Gogo Skhotheni was born in 1918 in the village of Nqamakwe in the Eastern Cape. She was the daughter of a sharecropper and a domestic worker. From a young age, she learned the value of hard work and compassion.
At the age of 16, Gogo Skhotheni left home to work as a domestic worker in Johannesburg. She quickly realized the harsh realities of life under apartheid. She witnessed firsthand the discrimination and injustice that black people faced every day.
Despite the challenges she faced, Gogo Skhotheni never lost her faith. She became a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and began working to fight against apartheid. She organized protests, boycotts, and other forms of nonviolent resistance.
In 1956, Gogo Skhotheni was arrested and imprisoned for her role in the Defiance Campaign. She spent nine months in jail, but she never gave up hope.
After her release from prison, Gogo Skhotheni continued to fight against apartheid. She became a leader in the Black Consciousness Movement and helped to inspire a new generation of activists.
In the 1980s, Gogo Skhotheni became a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF). She played a key role in the organisation's campaign against the apartheid government.
In 1994, South Africa finally held its first democratic elections. Gogo Skhotheni was 76 years old when she voted for the first time in her life.

A Legacy of Hope

Gogo Skhotheni died in 2006 at the age of 88. She left behind a legacy of hope and inspiration. She was a true pioneer who fought tirelessly for justice and equality.
