The Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident after Storm Arwen caused major disruption in the New Year’s Day floods which left homes underwater and rail lines closed.
In 2015, when Storm Desmond caused terrible floods in the Cumbria region, there were calls for more to be done by local authorities to help prevent flooding. Unfortunately those calls have been ignored by the water companies and the local councils and we are seeing the results today. With yet more homes underwater, and lives ruined once more due to flooding.
The Environment Agency issued 55 flood warnings across the region, meaning flooding was expected and residents should “act now.”
The local authorities have been instructing people in flood prone areas to evacuate and stay with friends or family if possible. However many people are unable to leave their homes due to the extreme weather and rising flood waters. The fire and rescue services have been working hard to help people escape their homes and get to safety.
The storm has caused widespread disruption to transport in the region, with many roads closed and train lines suspended. The Met Office has warned that the severe weather is expected to continue for the next few days, so it is important to stay safe and follow the advice of the local authorities.
If you are in an area that is at risk of flooding, please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your property. This includes moving valuables to higher ground and having an emergency plan in place in case you need to evacuate.
The local authorities are working hard to help those who have been affected by the flooding, and there are a number of resources available to help you get back on your feet. If you have been affected by the flooding, please contact your local council for more information.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
