This website is a quick guide to grid references.
You use grid references when you are trying to find something on a map like a town or building.
The grid lines on an OS map going up the grid are called 'Northings' and the lines going along are called 'eastings'.
When you are reading a grid look across to find the bottom number point you want and then up to find the next number point (along the corridor,up the stairs) to get your co-ordinate.
Four figure grid reference- could be used to pin point a location with a square measuring 1sq km.on a 4 figure grid you have 4 squares with numbers on the edge of each
Six figure grid reference- is just simply a step higher than 4 figure grid references- all that is different is that you should be able to divide 1 of the big squares in 4 figure into 10 little equal sections,by doing this you can pin point locations within the square
