Happy Dhanteras 2024

Dhanteras, an auspicious festival celebrated in India, falls on the Trayodashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is observed two days before Diwali and is closely associated with the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari.

In 2024, Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 22, Tuesday.

Significance of Dhanteras
Dhanteras holds immense significance in Hindu mythology and is considered the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean of milk during Samudra Manthan, holding a pot of gold coins. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Dhanteras is said to bring wealth and prosperity to households.
Additionally, Lord Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, is also venerated on Dhanteras. He is believed to have emerged from the ocean of milk along with Goddess Lakshmi, carrying a pot filled with Amrita (the elixir of life). Worshipping Lord Dhanvantari is believed to bestow good health and well-being.
Traditions and Rituals of Dhanteras
Dhanteras is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion throughout India. Various traditions and rituals are associated with the festival, including:
  • Purchasing Gold and Silver: It is considered auspicious to purchase gold or silver on Dhanteras. Many people buy gold jewelry, coins, or utensils to symbolize wealth and prosperity.
  • Cleaning the House: People thoroughly clean their homes and workplaces before Dhanteras to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Decorating with Diyas: Earthen lamps (diyas) are lit to illuminate homes and create a welcoming ambiance for Goddess Lakshmi.
  • Performing Lakshmi Puja: In the evening, families perform Lakshmi puja by offering prayers and offerings to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari. A special Rangoli, a traditional artwork made with colored rice powder, is created at the entrance of the home to invite the deities.
