The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned nationwide strike scheduled to commence on Monday, 28th September 2020.
This decision was reached after a meeting between the NLC and the Federal Government on Sunday, 27th September 2020, where an agreement was reached to address the demands of the labour union.
The NLC had threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to protest the recent increase in fuel and electricity prices by the Federal Government. The union had also demanded the implementation of the new minimum wage and the payment of all outstanding arrears of salaries to workers.
The Federal Government, in a bid to avert the strike, had invited the NLC for a meeting on Sunday, 27th September 2020. At the meeting, the government agreed to address the demands of the labour union.
The NLC, after considering the outcome of the meeting, resolved to suspend its planned strike. The union, however, warned that it would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government fails to fulfill its promises.
The suspension of the strike is a welcome development. It will help avert the disruption of economic activities that would have resulted from the strike. It is also a sign of the willingness of the government to dialogue with labour unions and to address their concerns.
The government must now ensure that it fulfills its promises to the NLC. This will help build trust between the government and labour unions and promote industrial harmony in the country.
The NLC, on its part, must continue to engage with the government in a constructive manner. The union must also be ready to compromise on some of its demands in order to reach an agreement that is acceptable to both parties.
The suspension of the strike is a positive step towards resolving the impasse between the government and the labour unions. It is hoped that the government will fulfill its promises and that the NLC will continue to engage with the government in a constructive manner.
