Heidi Alexander: A Deeper Dive

By Heidi Alexander
As a young schoolgirl, I adored the character Anne of Green Gables. Anne was an orphan – just like me. I felt an instant bond with her, and I’ve been in love with her story ever since. In fact, I’m writing to you from my beautiful little home on Prince Edward Island, the very setting of “Anne of Green Gables.” I can't imagine living anywhere else.
I grew up in an orphanage in England. It was actually a reasonably happy childhood, but I always longed for something more. I wanted a family, a place to belong. More than anything in the world, I wanted to be adopted. But time passed, the other children were adopted, and I wasn’t. I began to lose hope.
It was getting close to my 18th birthday, and I was getting ready to leave the orphanage. I had no idea what the future held. I was terrified. Then, out of the blue, I received a phone call. A lovely couple from Canada wanted to adopt me! I was so overwhelmed with joy, I could barely speak.
I arrived on Prince Edward Island a few weeks later, and I was immediately smitten. The rolling green hills, the sparkling blue waters, the charming towns and villages—it was like something out of a dream. I finally felt at home.
But I’ve never forgotten my roots. In fact, I’m now working with an orphanage in England. I’m doing everything I can to make sure that other children don’t have to experience the same loneliness and uncertainty that I did.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity to give back, and I’m so proud of the work that I’m doing. I know that I’m making a difference in the lives of these children. And that’s the best feeling in the world.

Here are some things I’ve learned along the way:

  • You’re never too old to find a home
  • It’s never too late to make a difference
  • Home is where you belong
