Helmut Modlik: A Journey of Leadership and Advocacy

The life of Helmut Modlik is a testament to the power of determination and the pursuit of justice. As a Māori leader, he has dedicated his career to fighting for the rights and interests of indigenous peoples in New Zealand and beyond.
Modlik was born in the small town of Huntly, New Zealand, and grew up in a working-class family. In 2002, Modlik was appointed as the CEO of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira, the governing body of the Ngāti Toa iwi. In this role, he led the tribe's efforts to achieve economic, social, and cultural development. Under his leadership, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira has played a key role in the revitalization of the Ngāti Toa language, culture, and identity.
Modlik has also been a strong advocate for the Treaty of Waitangi, a founding document that established the relationship between the British Crown and Māori. He believes that the Treaty is a living document that must be honored and implemented in a way that benefits all New Zealanders.
Modlik's work has not been without its challenges. He has faced criticism from both Māori and non-Māori alike, but he has remained steadfast in his commitment to justice and equality.
