Hoosiers Making a Resurgence Under New Coach

Indiana State basketball has been a sleeping giant for far too long. With a storied history that includes 16 NCAA Tournament appearances and a national runner-up finish in 1979, the Sycamores have fallen on hard times in recent years.

But there are signs of a resurgence under first-year head coach Josh Schertz. The Sycamores have won five of their first six games this season, including a 74-65 victory over defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Valparaiso.

Schertz's Impact

Schertz, a former assistant at Purdue and Indiana, has brought a new energy and enthusiasm to the Sycamores program. He has implemented a fast-paced, up-tempo style of play that has been a welcome change from the plodding, half-court offense of the past.

"Coach Schertz has been a great addition to our program," said senior forward Tyreke Key. "He has brought a new level of intensity and excitement to the team."

Key Returners

The Sycamores have also benefited from the return of several key players, including Key, who averaged 12.5 points per game last season. Other returning starters include guards Cooper Neese and Julian Larry, and forward Jake LaRavia.

Neese is a sharpshooting guard who can fill it up from beyond the arc. Larry is a quick and athletic point guard who can create for himself and others. LaRavia is a versatile forward who can score inside and out.

Fresh Faces

Schertz has also brought in some talented newcomers, including freshman guard Tre Williams. Williams is a dynamic playmaker who can score in bunches. He is averaging 10.3 points per game this season.

Another key newcomer is junior college transfer Manny Locke. Locke is a physical post player who can rebound and score in the paint. He is averaging 9.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

Outlook

The Sycamores have a lot of potential this season. They have a good mix of experience and youth, and they are playing with a lot of confidence. If they can stay healthy and continue to improve, they could be a surprise team in the Missouri Valley Conference this year.
