Howard Basketball: A Journey Back to Prominence

In the annals of college basketball, few teams have experienced a rise and fall as dramatic as Howard University. Once a powerhouse, the Bison had fallen on hard times, their once-lauded program languishing in obscurity. But in recent years, a resurgence is underway, fueled by a resurgence of talent, unwavering determination, and a visionary coach.
The journey back began under the leadership of Kevin Nickelberry, a former Bison star who took over as head coach in 2019. With a deep understanding of the program's history and a burning desire to restore its former glory, Nickelberry set to work. He recruited promising young players, instilled a relentless work ethic, and fostered a culture of unity and accountability.

One of the key catalysts for Howard's revival was the arrival of 6'7" forward Kyle Foster. Hailing from a small town in North Carolina, Foster possessed a rare combination of athleticism, skill, and leadership. He quickly became the cornerstone of the Bison offense, averaging 19.3 points per game and leading the team to a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2022.
Alongside Foster, a talented cast of supporting players emerged. Isaiah Moore, a sharpshooting guard, provided a lethal threat from beyond the arc. Bryce Harris, a tenacious defender, anchored the backcourt with his unwavering intensity. And Steve Settle, a versatile forward, showcased his all-around skills with impressive contributions on both ends of the court.
The Bison's resurgence was not without its challenges. The team faced stiff competition in the ultra-competitive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and had to overcome a series of injuries throughout the season. But through it all, the players remained steadfast in their belief and determination.
The pinnacle of Howard's season came in the 2023 MEAC Tournament final. Facing off against arch-rival Norfolk State, the Bison played with unmatched heart and intensity. Foster exploded for 27 points, while Harris and Settle made key contributions in a hard-fought victory. The triumph not only secured Howard's first MEAC Tournament title in over 15 years but also earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
In the NCAA Tournament, the Bison faced the daunting task of taking on top-seeded Arizona in the first round. Despite being underdogs, Howard played with fearless determination, pushing the Wildcats to the limit. Although they ultimately fell short, the Bison left an unforgettable impression on the college basketball world.
The resurgence of Howard basketball is a testament to the power of belief, hard work, and unity. Under the leadership of Kevin Nickelberry and the exceptional talents of Kyle Foster and his teammates, the Bison have reclaimed their place among the nation's elite. As they continue their journey back to prominence, Howard basketball is once again a source of pride and inspiration for the university and the entire community.
