Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of the Benin Kingdom, is a man of many parts. As a businessman, philanthropist, and politician, he has made his mark in various spheres of life, both in Nigeria and beyond.
Igbinedion was born on September 11, 1934, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He is the son of Josiah Oviawe Igbinedion, a prominent Benin chief, and Okunozee Igbinedion.
Igbinedion began his education at the Government School in Benin City. He later attended the prestigious St. Patrick's College, Asaba, where he excelled in his studies. After graduating from St. Patrick's College, he proceeded to the United Kingdom to study law at the University of London.
Igbinedion returned to Nigeria in 1962 and began his legal practice. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the most successful lawyers in the country. In 1983, he was appointed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Bendel State.
Igbinedion's foray into business began in the 1970s when he established a chain of supermarkets in Benin City. He later expanded his business interests to include real estate, oil and gas, and banking.
In 1999, Igbinedion was elected the governor of Edo State. He served in that position for two terms, from 1999 to 2007. During his tenure as governor, he made significant contributions to the development of the state, especially in the areas of education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
After leaving office as governor, Igbinedion continued to be active in business and philanthropy. He is the founder and chairman of the Igbinedion Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Nigeria. He is also the founder and chancellor of the Igbinedion University, a private university located in Okada, Edo State.
Igbinedion is a recipient of numerous awards and honors, both in Nigeria and internationally. He is a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and a Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great (GCRG).
Igbinedion is married to Cherry Igbinedion, and they have six children.
