Deforestation
Did you know that forested areas the sizes of panama are being cut down each year? The world’s rain forests could be completely gone in 100 years if we cut down trees at this rate for that long. Imagine how much oxygen we would lose, and how much more our ozone layer would diminish! That’s why it’s important to try to stop deforestation; this is the act of cutting down masses of trees.
There are numerous causes of why deforestation happens. Trees are cut down for making things like paper, furniture, and building other sorts of stuff. They are cut down for clearing land to make room for more people in our over populated world, and farming in a process called slash and burn.
The effects of deforestation are not good for our environment at all. When the trees are cut down soil gets much more solar radiation, which can dry soil out over a few years, and make it unfertile and weak for agriculture, forcing farmers to go elsewhere and redo the process. Trees absorb lots of water, and when they are cleared from an area and it rains, the water washes nutrients away from the soil, making it quite unfertile.
