Ireland braced for Snowmageddon as Met Éireann issues weather warning

Ireland is set to be hit by heavy snow and strong winds over the coming days, with Met Éireann issuing a status orange weather warning for the entire country.

The warning is in place from 4pm on Saturday until 12pm on Monday, and Met Éireann has warned of "significant snow accumulations" and "blizzard-like conditions" in some areas.

The snow is expected to be most severe in the east and south of the country, with up to 30cm of snow possible in some areas.

Met Éireann has advised people to stay indoors if possible and to avoid unnecessary travel.

The snow is expected to cause widespread disruption to transport and power supplies, and schools and businesses are likely to be closed.

The cold weather is expected to continue into next week, with further snow showers possible.

Met Éireann has urged people to stay up-to-date with the latest weather forecasts and to take precautions to stay safe in the cold weather.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe in the snow:

  • Stay indoors if possible.
  • If you must travel, take public transport or walk if possible.
  • If you are driving, make sure your car is well-maintained and has winter tires.
  • Drive slowly and carefully in snowy conditions.
  • Be aware of the dangers of black ice.
  • Wear warm, waterproof clothing.
  • Keep your home well-heated.
  • Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
