It is with great sadness that we report the death of 29-year-old Robert Deegan from Newbridge in County Kildare, who lost his life fighting for Ukraine.
Deegan was a former member of the Irish Defence Forces and had previously lost an eye in an explosion. Despite this, he chose to volunteer in Ukraine to help defend the country against the Russian invasion.
Deegan was reportedly killed while fighting on the frontline in eastern Ukraine last Thursday. Tributes have poured in from his family, friends, and fellow soldiers, who have described him as a "hero of Ireland".
His death is a reminder of the high price that people are willing to pay for freedom and democracy. May he rest in peace.
The following is a statement from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade:
"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the death of an Irish citizen in Ukraine. The Embassy of Ireland in Ukraine is in contact with the family of the deceased and is providing consular assistance. The family request that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."
The following is a statement from the Irish Defence Forces:
"The Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, said: 'I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of Robert Deegan in Ukraine. On behalf of the Defence Forces, I want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Robert was a brave and selfless man who died fighting for what he believed in. He will be remembered as a hero of Ireland.'"
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Robert Deegan.
