Is MLK Day a Federal Holiday?

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law that designated the third Monday in January as a federal holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The holiday is celebrated on the closest Monday to King's birthday, which is January 15th.

  • In 2023, MLK Day falls on Monday, January 16th.

MLK Day is a day to remember Dr. King's life and legacy. He was a civil rights leader who fought for equality and justice for all.

His work helped to bring about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
